Certificates of Deposit

Where Your Money Grows Without the Guesswork

Looking for a safe, predictable way to grow your savings? Our CDs give you competitive rates, set terms, and the peace of knowing your money is working for you.

What Makes Our CDs a Smart Choice

  • Start With $1,000 – You need just $1,000 to open a CD.

  • Earn Monthly Dividends – We pay dividends every month. You can have them paid out or roll them back into the CD to grow faster.

  • Fixed Term, No Surprise Add-Ins – Once you lock in the term, you stay locked in. No adding more principal during the term.

  • Automatic Renewal Option – At maturity, your CD will renew automatically (unless you tell us otherwise).‡

  • Federally Insured – As always, your deposits are protected by the NCUA.

‡At maturity, unless you tell us otherwise, the CD renews automatically at the rate in effect at that time. To change the term, withdraw funds, or otherwise modify, make your request within 10 days of CD maturity.

How Certificates of Deposit Work

A CD (Certificate of Deposit) is like agreeing to let your money rest for a set time — 6 months, one year, maybe more — in exchange for a guaranteed return. Here’s how it goes:

  1. You deposit your funds.

  2. You choose how long to lock them up — that’s the “term.”

  3. We pay you interest during the term.

  4. At maturity, you get your original deposit + all the interest earned.

If you withdraw early, there’s a penalty (you’ll lose some interest).

CD FAQs

Do I need to be a member to open a CD?

Yes. A CD is a part of what comes with membership at 1st University Credit Union. If you’re not a member yet, we’ll walk you through getting set up.

Can I add more money once the CD is open?

No. Once your CD is active, additional principal funds during the term are not permitted.

When do I get my interest?

Dividends are paid out every month. You can choose to receive them or have them reinvested into the CD.

What happens at maturity?

Your CD will automatically renew at the prevailing rate unless you tell us otherwise. If you want something different (a new term, withdraw the money, don’t renew), just let us know in that 10-day grace period around maturity.‡

Is there a penalty for taking my money out early?

Yes. If you withdraw before the CD term ends, you’ll pay a penalty (it usually means losing some interest).

How safe are my funds?

Very safe. All CD deposits are federally insured by the NCUA up to $250,000.

‡At maturity, unless you tell us otherwise, the CD renews automatically at the rate in effect at that time. To change the term, withdraw funds, or otherwise modify, make your request within 10 days of CD maturity.
