September is National Preparedness Month – Do One Thing!
Life can be unpredictable — from Texas thunderstorms to unexpected expenses — but a little preparation can go a long way toward keeping your family safe and secure.
This September, in honor of National Preparedness Month, we’re inviting you to “Do One Thing” to get a little more ready for whatever life throws your way. The good news? You don’t have to do it all at once. Just one simple step at a time can make a big difference.
Pick Your First “Thing” This Month
Here are a few ideas to get you started:
Sign Up for Emergency Alerts
Many counties offer free emergency alerts so you’ll be notified about severe storms, flash floods, and other emergencies. Here’s a link to sign up for McLennan County’s Emergency Notification System. Tip: make sure you choose multiple locations — like home, work, and your child’s school — so you get the info that matters most to you.Create a Family Communication Plan
Write down key phone numbers, choose a meeting place if you’re separated, and make sure everyone in your household knows the plan.Build a Basic Emergency Kit
A few essentials can go a long way in an emergency: water, non-perishable food, flashlight, batteries, and a small first aid kit.Strengthen Your Financial Preparedness
Emergencies aren’t just about weather — they can be financial too. Start an emergency savings fund or set up automatic transfers into your savings account. Even $10 a week can build a cushion over time.Check Your Insurance Coverage
Make sure your home, auto, and life insurance are up to date and provide the coverage you’d need if disaster strikes.
Take Your First Step Today
Preparedness doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Pick just one thing to focus on this month. And then check it off your list. Next month, pick another. Little by little, you’ll build confidence and peace of mind.
At 1st University Credit Union, we’re here to help you do life — and that means helping you prepare for it, too.
