Where Baylor Alumni Have Banked Since 1956

In 1956, the president of Baylor University wrote a letter to the Texas Credit Union Department requesting a charter for a credit union. Once granted, our founding members — Baylor Alumni, Employees, Students, and their families — created the financial cooperative we now call 1st University Credit Union. Their vision was to come together to help each other reach life’s goals. Today, we continue to affirm this mission by delivering financial solutions to those same groups — Baylor Alumni, Faculty, Staff, Students, and their Families — with exceptional service to our members.

Who Qualifies For Baylor Alumni Status?

Baylor Alumni includes anyone who has taken at least one course in one semester at some point in the past. It also includes Baylor Alumni by Choice; members of this association are friends of Baylor University but are not traditional Baylor alumni. Which means, you don’t need to have graduated from Baylor to take advantage of the checking and savings accounts, and loans that are offered here at 1st University Credit Union.

The best part about what we offer as a credit union comes from the fact that we are a not-for-profit financial cooperative. Sure, 1st UCU offers the same products as banks, but unlike banks we don’t have any outside owners or shareholders. Instead, our members are our owners. Just like when the credit union was formed by Baylor Alumni, Staff, Faculty, and Students, members pool their money by making deposits into their savings, checking, money market, and/or certificate accounts. That money is then loaned to members so they can purchase the things they need and want, like automobiles, homes, boats and RVs, education, and more.

But because we don’t have outside owners pressuring us to make more and more profits like banks do, we can set our rates (dividends on deposits and interest on loans) and fees to the benefit of our members while maintaining the financial security of the credit union. That means our profits are reinvested in you, giving you more for your money in the form of better rates, better services, and your ability to achieve your goals sooner.
